The
Capones were formed at the end of 2002 in Birmingham, under the name Let The
Wookie Win. Although LTWW had already briefly existed with a different line-up,
it was only with the addition of Davey Hunchback ( then also a member of 3 1/2
Inch Floppy) that the band started practicing regularly and began gigging. The
bands first gig was at The Brook pub in Selly Oak, Birmingham in December 2002.
Since then the band have played around the UK, although mainly in Birmingham and
Coventry. Amongst many others The Capones have played with Big D and The Kids
Table, Atom and His Package, Sonic Boom Six, the cracked actors & p.a.i.n.
The bands first (no longer available-for good reason) demo tape (titled simply
Let The Wookie Win) was recorded on Rich's old four track machine and displayed
a heavy emphasis on ska with little of the harder edge now seen evident. The
songs on this recording were also mainly on the theme of love, a subject matter
which has become far more conspicuous through its absence in more recent months.
The next recording the band attempted resulted in three tracks recorded
partially on 4-track and partially onto a £3 computer programme. These tracks,
along with Nothing Left, the first studio-recorded track for a Birmingham
University compilation CD, made up the bands 2nd demo: "I Get The Feeling
I've Been Cheated".
With the band settling into their own style, blending trad-ska, two-tone, punk
and reggae influences, they finally headed to a studio to record more
professionally. With Simon Bishop at the controls, The Capones laid down a
selection of tunes, three of which make up the "A Better Way" EP in
November 2003.
